United States v Ghana preview/prediction

The United States will play in the round of 16 v Ghana tomorrow at 2:30 pm est/11:30 am pst in what will be deemed an even match. After the thrilling victory v Algeria, the Americans need to avoid an emotional hangover that may occur. Their propensity to allow early goals will most certainly be tested against the youngest team in the World Cup, but perhaps the most athletic as well. The Black Stars (as they are affectionately known) advanced from their group as the only African side to move on to the knockout round. Their side relies heavily on their defense, as manager Milovan Rajevac employs a 4-5-1 formation. The midfield of Ghana is very physical and hardworking, and thus this level is the engine that effectively drives the team. The crowd could very well provide a great advantage to Ghana. They are the only African side remaining in the tournament and the crowd could very well be extremely pro-Ghana. Within that same token, they are the last hope for the continent of Africa, so the pressure could mount and work against The Black Stars.

Ghana is dissimilar to most African sides, as they are cohesive as a unit, playing with a structure. The squad however is missing it's best player and starting midfielder in Michael Essien, but they still have great young quality across the pitch. Starting striker Asamoah Gyan is a pacy talisman that has scored some good goals for Ghana and is the loan striker that can hold the ball up as midfielders push forward into the attack. 20 year old midfielder Andre Ayew is the creative force for Ghana and has played very well thus far. His partner in the midfield Kwadwo Asamoah is the enforcer in the centre of the pitch that took over Essien's spot. The Udinese player has been outstanding thus far and his matchup against the likes of Michael Bradley and whoever is paired with Bradley will be paramount.

Ghana was able to advance due to their compactness on defense coupled with their composure and discipline. Their willingness to defend coupled with their youth and athleticism has caused problems for many teams. An interesting statistic is that Ghana has scored more than one goal only once in their last thirteen games. The United States hopes this trend continues. Interestingly enough as well that the goals scored in this tournament have been penalty kicks. For the United State's sake, hopefully there won't be any phantom penalty kick calls a la 2006 when Stephen Appiah slotted one home which proved to be the difference in the game. The Ghanians also do have the reputation of, shall we say...diving quite frequently.

PROJECTED LINEUP V GHANA:

Altidore

Dempsey Feilhaber Donovan

Bradley Edu

Bornstein Demerit Bocanegra Cherundolo

Due to the speed element brought to the table, I believe Bornstein gets the nod starting again. It would not surprise me in the least bit to see Oguchi Onyewu start in this game, but his strengths (namely his aerial prowess) are going to be tested much in this game, and coming off of a knee injury his fitness and timing still isn't quite there against a very fast Ghanian team. Dempsey could get the nod up front as a second striker, or to combat the 4-5-1 formation, the United States could choose to use Altidore as a lone striker with a midfielder such as Benny Feilhaber or Stuart Holden coming in to enhance the center of the pitch. Findley, who was suspended for the last match due to a yellow card accumulation could resume his spot aside Altidore assuming Bradley chooses to use a 4-4-2 formation. Edson Buddle could very well start due to his ability to hold the ball up, because truthfully Findley is on the pitch due to this speed. This will be the first time that that Findley won't have a distinct advantage because he will be potentially going against players that are as fast, or are faster than he is. Edu and Ricardo Clark is a toss up at this point but I believe Edu will ultimately get the nod.

The start of the game will be key. Ghana's ineptness to finish in front of goal hasn't been a problem as of late, but their chances need to be taken advantage of if they are to beat the United States. The Black Stars are essentially an enhanced version of Algeria. A big question will be how the United States comes out. They expelled so much effort and emotion in the thrilling 1-0 victory only 3 days ago, so fatigue could come into play against a young side. Look for the United States to attack the backline of Ghana. Centerback Jonathan Mensah is only age 19, so experience could be a problem. Outside back Hans Sarpei is 33 years old and doesn't have the pace he used to have, so Donovan could definitely exploit that matchup. This will be a very interesting match between two relatively even sides. The United States will look to control the possession in this game and I believe that they will, especially if a fifth midfielder is added to the mix. A big question will be the level of energy the United States will have. But if recent history is any indication, Bob Bradley's boys will come out with the positive attitude and the absolute grit and character needed to come across with a positive result. Revenge might be sweet for the Americans, who were unceremoniously bounced from the 2006 World Cup...by Ghana. The "Never Say Die" attitude will come through once again.

Algeria Preview/Prediction

This is a make or break game for the United States as they take the field v Algeria (9:30 am est/6:30 am pst). For the Americans it's quite simple: A win propels Bob Bradley's boys into the round of 16 and a loss sends them back to the states. A tie complicates things and depending on the result in the England v Slovenia game, the Americans could move on due to the right scenario.

The Algerian side was thought of to be the easiest team in the group when the pairings were announced, but they absolutely cannot be taken lightly in the least bit. After losing to Slovenia 1-0 in the opening game (where they outplayed the Slovenians, and save for a goalkeeping gaffe would have gotten a point), they drew with England, showing that they are very much a big threat but also illustrating that they could give the USMNT problems.

The Desert Foxes are an enigma; One minute they look like world beaters, and in the next moment they show the patience and maturity of a U-10 soccer team. Midfielders Hassan Yebda and Karim Ziani form a dangerous pairing in the midfield. They both showed immense skill against England and time after time proved to be very effective in regards to their passing ability. They like to get forward and attack in the final third. Midfielder Ryad Boudebouz is very clever and adventurous on the ball and showed his cheeky skill quite well against England. Forward Karim Matmour provides the threat up top for Algeria. He has good size and speed on the ball and looks to push ad nauseum. He is a club teammate of United States Midfielder Michael Bradley so that should bode well for the Americans as they have inside knowledge of Matmour. Oddly enough, the player the Americans should most keep an eye out for and fear would be Portsmouth leftback Nadir Belhadj. Belhadj was an absolute terror against the English, tearing up and down the flanks with his incredible speed. He most definitely is one of the paciest players in the world and had the penchant for causing immense difficulty on the left side with his skillful footwork and his deft crosses. United States right back Steve Cherundolo definitely has his hands full with Belhadj and it is paramount for him to neutralize Belhadj as best as possible. An area to possibly exploit would be the frequency that Belhadj enters up the pitch, as he's sometimes exposed and thusly out of position. This would be prime for Landon Donovan to take advantage of.

PREDICTED LINEUP V ALGERIA:

Altidore Dempsey

Holden Clark Bradley Donovan

Bocanegra Demerit Onyewu Cherundolo

Howard

Clint Dempsey will get the start just due to the magnitude of this game. I don't see Bob Bradley trotting out Edson Buddle or Herculez Gomez just simply for the fact that they lack experience on the worlds stage, and Dempsey doesn't. The fact that Dempsey also scores many of his goals for the Americans while playing up top bodes well for that choice. Stuart Holden looks to be the first midfielder off the bench for Bradley playing on the flanks. He has good pace but more importantly he works extremely hard. His will and grit in the midfield will definitely be tested by the athletic and skilled midfield of Algeria. Ricardo Clark takes his place back in the centre of the park due to his prowess of breaking plays up and making it difficult for the midfields of opposing teams to function. His play is going to be key if the Americans are to slow down the midfield of the Desert Foxes.

FINAL SCORE PREDICTION:

United States 2 Algeria 1

I think this will be a hard fought game with the teams battling to get into the second round. Algeria possesses great confidence at the moment and the game will definitely be a war. Algeria is a very athletic and skilled team. One needs to remember that the majority of these players grew up in France and played in youth games for the French National Team, so they definitely have talent even if they are not household names. The volitile nature of the Algerians might prove to be a positive for the Americans, especially if frustration sets in. The Algerians are known to have literal tantrums and even provide dangerous play physically if the game isn't going in their favor. It will leave their team open to counterattacks especially since they carry the stigma of being somewhat lazy.Though Algeria hasn't scored yet in this tournament, the United States is susceptible to allowing weak and inopportune goals, and I feel like one of the solid Algerian midfielders will put one away. It would not surprise me however, to see the United States winning handily. If the United States can come out and not allow an early goal and actually take the lead, it will put pressure on Algeria and thusly they may crack. Their willingness at pushing up the pitch already leaves them prime for a defensive lapse, but if they are down a goal it leaves them exposed even more. After the triumphant come back v Slovenia and the controversy over the disallowed goal, there's no way in my mind that Bradley's bunch does not come out with the will to win. I expect them to play very well.

This game represents more than just a move to the second round. A win would help to enhance the belief that the sport is growing in the country and isn't just a passing interest come world cup time. Sure, the sport is exponentially growing in the United States but for it to take the next step in popularity, the team needs to move to the round of 16 and strike when the proverbial iron is hot (in terms of the mass amounts of interest and media coverage on the National Team, which has been unprecedented). The importance of the result of this match cannot be understated.

FINAL: Slovenia 2 United States 2

Once again, the USMNT conceded an early goal and went down 2-0 at halftime before a storming comeback in the second half saw the team tie Slovenia 2-2. Goals by Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley were extremely well taken, and a third goal by Maurice Edu was disallowed by a call not understood to anyone but the referee. The officiating of this match was lackluster, to say the least, and this game definitely goes down as the most controversial of this tournament, and the most exciting as well.

The team sits with 2 points heading into their final match v Algeria. Slovenia tops the group with 4 points as the two teams await the England v Algeria match later today (2:30 pm est/11:30 am pst).

Projected Lineup v Slovenia and more

It's going to very interesting to see what Bob Bradley does here. Speed is what gave Slovenia problems in the first game and that facet of the game could be exploited with the possible inclusions of DaMarcus Beasley or Stuart Holden. Jose Torres would be a welcomed sight in the centre of the park for Ricardo Clark. Torres provides a confidence on the ball that no other US midfielder has, not to mention his immense technical ability. His through balls, passing prowess, and cheeky touches could open up the field for Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, and Jozy Altidore to run onto. Another question to answer is whether Robbie Findley will stay up top or if Edson Buddle gets his chance up top. It's been argued that Buddle and Altidore are too similar to start next to one another but it remains to be seen. With that said, here's the lineup I see Bradley trotting out...

Howard

Bocanegra Onyewu Demerit Cherundolo

Donovan Bradley Torres Dempsey

Altidore Findley

I see Findley staying up top just simply due to the speed factor he possesses, although I think Buddle or Herculez Gomez gets into the game much earlier than they did v England. Torres gets the call ahead of Clark just based on what was written above. When he is in the game, the team flows much better and he creates many more scoring opportunities as opposed to Clark. While he doesn't possess the size, grit, or defensive capabilities that Clark does, Torres allows for players to get forward, which will be paramount in a match where spacing will be crucial.

Game Prediction: United States 2 Slovenia 0

I can't see the United States losing this game. They will definitely be prepared and will not take the smallest nation competing in this World Cup lightly. The way the United States took Wayne Rooney out of the match was beautiful, as he didn't even touch the ball until the 17th minute. This will be the plan against Robert Koren as well, as Michael Bradley will draw the assignment in stopping the former West Brom man. The speed of the United States will cause the Slovenians problems in this highly competitive match and I believe that Donovan will have a much more impacting game than he had against England.

Check back tomorrow for more updates and news...

JOGA BONITO

Keys v Slovenia

This being the second of three group play matches is of great importance to both sides. Slovenia currently sit atop Group C with 3 points, followed with the United States and England level at 1 a piece, ending with Algeria in last place with none. This is close to a must win for the Americans, because it's more than likely that England will beat Algeria, so it's imperative to gain points out of this match.

KEYS TO THE GAME

1. Use the width of the pitch

Slovenia plays very similarly to the United States in that they play incredibly compact while absorbing pressure. Their physical defense is very staunch and fundamental, allowing only 4 goals in 10 World Cup qualifying matches. In the first match v Algeria, the speed of the Desert Foxes caused the Slovenians many problems, especially out on the flank. This is where the majority of the few scoring chances stemmed from. Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey will have the opportunities to go forward in this game, much more than they did against England. Their speed will be key, and it would not be a surprise to see Coach Bob Bradley insert DaMarcus Beasley into the game at some point. There's even the possibility that Beasley sees a start in this game where the United States will look to attack early and often. Within that same notion, the back four of Slovenia looked slow and sometimes plodding against Algeria, so that could be an area in which the USMNT exposes.

2. Contain Robert Koren and Milivoje Novakovic

Slovenia is not a team that is free flowing a la Argentina, Spain, or Germany, but they do have some offensive quality on the pitch. The nature of their offensive philosophy as I previously mentioned is one of the counterattacking variety. They stay concise and compact defensively and look to break at the opportune moments. The two individuals leading those opportunities are central midfielder Robert Koren and forward Milivoje Novakovic. Koren is the maestro that looks to spray the ball around to the pacy outside midfielders in Valter Birsa and Andraz Kirm. He is the engine that makes the team go and has to be smothered by the midfield of the United States. Novakovic is a taller target forward that is very mobile. He does play like a smaller player and frequently floats down in the midfield where he facilitates up the pitch to the aforementioned outside midfielders. He doesn't play positionally like a true forward but he's dangerous nonetheless. Bradley's boys have to be cognizant of these two players at all times if they are to be victorious.

3. Prevent an early goal

This should be rather self explanatory but Bradley's side has the frequent propensity to allow early goals. This isn't ideal by any means as it puts the team in an early hole but it can't continue. Coming back against England was allowed by the gifted goal of the much maligned England goalkeeper Robert Green, but the Slovenians are arguably more cohesive of a unit defensively and it will not be easy scoring goals against them.

Predictions: Day 3

Match 1: Algeria v Slovenia (7 am est/4 am pst)

This match is of great interest to the Americans as their fellow group mates play in their first game. The Slovenians are led by stellar Keeper Samir Handanovic and Midfielder Robert Koren. Algeria is paced by Midfielder Karim Ziani and Forward Abdelkader Ghezzal. I see this game being relatively close as both teams have quality across the board. Algeria has shown the propensity to play somewhat dirty and also very emotionally, so the Slovenians will look to take advantage of that. Algeria is dealing with distraction, as captain Yazid Mansouri was benched for a lack of form and fitness. When told of the news, he left training immediately.

Prediction: Slovenia 2 Algeria 1

Match 2: Serbia v Ghana (9: 30 est/6: 30 pst)

This has the potential to be one of the most exciting and intriguing matches of the first round. The Ghanians is missing captain and best player Michael Essien to injury but still bring loads of class to the pitch in the form of Sulley Muntari, John Paintsil, and Stephen Appiah. Nemanja Vidic, Branislav Ivanovic, and Neven Subotic form a defense for Serbia that is considered one of the most talented in the world, and Midfield maestro Dejan Stankovic is pure class in the midfield. Forwards Nikola Zigic and Danko Lazovic form a very potent tandem up top that cause problems due to their sheer heights (6'7 and 6'1 respectively). The loss of Essien is paramount for The Black Stars, but their overall pace and youth could cause Serbia trouble. I see Serbia edging Ghana in a very up and down game chalk full of excitement and drama.

Prediction: Serbia 3 Ghana 2

Match 3: Germany v Australia (2 pm est/11:00 am pst)

The final match on Sunday pits a very youthful and inexperienced German side against a veteran Aussie squad. The loss of Midfielder and captain Michael Ballack hurts Germany as they've lost 3 starters over the last month to injury, but they still retain some great talent. Twenty-one year old Midfielder Mesut Ozil is an absolute dynamo and terror on the flank and looks to be the next German star at a big club. Along with Ozil, Germany will rely on stalwart Bastian Schweinsteiger and the experienced tandem up top of Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski. Out of the 23 man roster that Coach Joachim Low assembled, an astounding 15 are twenty-five years old or younger. The Kickeroos bring a team that has a nice blend of youth and experience. The team relies on Forward Tim Cahill and Midfielder Harry Kewell. Kewell, when healthy is a very impressive player but he is coming off of an injury and hasn't featured for a while. Australia hopes he will be healthy enough to start come Sunday. Keeper Mark Schwarzer is a very good goalkeeper, but the backline is very susceptible to speed. They were exposed numerous times a week ago by the United States in a friendly. I see the overall class of the Germans shining in this game even if they are an extremely young side. The midfield of the Germans will push the ball forward and I see them attacking the Aussies early and often.

Prediction: Germany 3 Australia 1

JOGA BONITO

Thoughts on match v. England

Players of the match:

TIM HOWARD

This should go without saying, but the Everton keeper was fabulous today, keeping England at bay and stopping point blank shots taken by amongst others English forward Emile Heskey The confidence Howard displayed has got to be encouraging for USMNT fans, and this performance just enhances the notion that Howard is amongst the world's best keepers.

JAY DEMERIT

The backline of the American defense had to play well and namely contain English forward Wayne Rooney if they had any chance at getting a positive result, and that's exactly what happened in large part to the Watford defender. Demerit was his usual self, throwing his body at shots and playing very physical. His smart and physical play annoyed and frustrated Rooney to no end, and by the 70th minute Rooney found himself tracking back up the pitch just to receive the ball. Demerit was just smothering on Rooney, making him invisible for most of the game.

OGUCHI ONYEWU

Coach Bob Bradley
took a chance at playing "Gooch" (who hasn't played a full 90 since October) against the three lions, and the gamble paid off. He resembled the player pre-injury and looked very good. He was active in the air, going up for countless headers not only defensively but also on corners. The mental hurdle of actually jumping seems to be gone at this point. Towards the end of the game he had a great sequence where he poked the ball away on a 50/50 challenge from Midfielder Steven Gerrard and proceeded to get up and pass the ball upfield. This is a welcomed sight for the team and USMNT fans, but it remains to be seen how his knee will react tomorrow. Regardless, it was a very positive showing.

STEVE CHERUNDOLO

The fullback from Hannover stole Jonathan Spector's spot in recent friendlies and proved why today. He was downright dangerous on the right flank, skinning Midfielder James Milner more than once. His willingness to take players on was quite refreshing and besides a rash challenge that led to a yellow card against Midfielder Shaun Wright-Philips, Cherundolo was very solid.

This was a great result from the United States going into the match against Slovenia. Bradley has to be very pleased with the overall performance of the defense. There were some shaky moments communication wise, but the back four was very good today, effectively shutting down one of the best players in the world (Rooney). The midfield was a problem yet again as the distribution from Michael Bradley and Ricardo Clark was sub par. Clark's ineptness in guarding Gerrard led to the goal, and he was constantly out of position. I look for a switch in the next match, with either Maurice Edu or Jose Torres starting alongside Bradley. Torres would be ideal against Slovenia due to his technical ability and his passing deftness. It would have been nice to see Landon Donovan more involved although he did have some nice crosses and passes. His ability to use his speed and take players on was missing in this game. Clint Dempsey scored on the gaffe by English Keeper Robert Green and was his usual hard-working self. The main point is that the midfield play has to be better if the United States is to advance in the tournament. The distribution and cohesiveness in the centre of the park needs to be more crisp. The tandem up top of Robbie Findley and Jozy Altidore was rather quiet. Findley did do some nice things before being subbed out, and Altidore flashed his immense potential when he effectively shouldered off and ran past English Defender Jamie Carragher in the midst of his shot which deflected off Green and then the post. Overall this game was not the prettiest and it wasn't the United State's best effort, but they will take the point and await Slovenia on Friday.

JOGA BONITO

FINAL: ENGLAND 1 UNITED STATES 1

After withstanding a strong English push in the second half, the USMNT was able to stay tough and get the draw and a point from the match. More to follow...

JOGA BONITO

Halftime: England 1 United States 1

Thanks to a horrific gaffe made by England Keeper Robert Green, the US are level at 1. England scored in the 4th minute thanks to a Steven Gerrard finish. The game has been back and forth with both teams getting great chances. The US distribution in the midfield is lacking and it might cause Coach Bob Bradley to bring in Jose Torres for Ricardo Clark. Oguchi Onyewu looks solid so far, although the communication from the back 4 has been lacking at times. Steve Cherundolo has looked very good taking players on and Robbie Findley has had some deft touches up top. Landon Donovan needs to get involved more, and the same could be said for England forward Wayne Rooney, who has been nonexistent in the first half.

Preview: United States v England

The day all USMNT fans have been waiting for is finally here. The United States will take to the pitch v England tomorrow at 1:30 est/10:30 pst. The opening game of group C will take place at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg.

It will be quite interesting to see the lineups that Coaches Bob Bradley and Fabio Capello bring out so we'll try to provide a best guess scenario as to the lineups...

USA:

Howard
Bocanegra Demerit Onyewu Cherundolo
Dempsey Bradley Edu Donovan
Findley Altidore

There are many questions that Bob Bradley has to answer. Who does he start alongside Jozy Altidore? Does he go for the speed of Robbie Findley or the recent torrid form that Edson Buddle's been on? Who will start alongside Michael Bradley in the midfield? Will Oguchi Onyewu be able to not only start but be effective?

Ricardo Clark looked horrific against the Australians. The lack of precision and the carlessness of his distribution will cost him a starting spot. If he starts and plays like that against England, the United States will get dominated by the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. Maurice Edu brings more size, athleticism, and versatility. He matches up size wise very well with the two starts in the middle for the English. I give Findley the nod up top due the speed he brings. Although Buddle is playing with supreme confidence, he is too similar to Altidore. Both are target forwards that won't open up the field necessarily with their speed. The speed of Findley has made a difference in opening up the pitch for players like Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey to get forward and create in the final third of the pitch. Onyewu has looked anything but solid since his return from the patella injury, but he has to start against England. He's had enough time and rest and it leads me to believe that Bradley will in fact send him to pair with Jay Demerit.

England's projected lineup:

Green

Cole King Terry Johnson
Lennon Gerrard Lampard Cole
Rooney Crouch

The England possess great talent across the pitch but as of late there's been a cause for concern. Captain and long time central back Rio Ferdinand suffered a freak accident in training which is causing him to miss the world cup. Insert Ledley King, whom has a long history of knee injuries himself. Whilst there is issues in the back, the goalkeeping position is also up in the air. Capello hasn't indicated one way or another as to which goalkeeper will face the Americans. At this point it's anyone's guess, although David James has been suffering from a slight knee injury. The pairing up top of Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch work well together. Rooney is England's best player and shows an inordinate amount of heart, emotion, and grit every time he steps onto the field. This has had the propensity to work against him however, as his temper has costed not only himself but his team as well. While Crouch is likely to start, it would not be a surprise to see Emile Heskey alongside Rooney. In a recent game against a local South African team, England was up only 1-0 at halftime and won the game 3-0. Reports say that England looked pitiful aside from Joe Cole, and this displeased Capello so much that he stayed situated on the sidelines for the whole halftime, not addressing his team at all. The world class midfield pairing of Gerrard and Lampard was said to be knocked around pretty handily.

Prediction: United States 2 England 1

Call it a hunch, but I see the Yanks pulling off the upset. This game is the perfect storm for the Americans. The immense pressure by the English press, the recent teammate turmoil, injuries, and the poor form as of late, not to mention the huge chip on the shoulder that the Americans carry as the underdogs given little chance to win. English outside backs Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson have great speed and attack very well from the flanks, but they have had problems getting caught out of position, especially Johnson. The United States will capitalize on that and Donovan will use his own pace to expose the back 4. The midfield is the key in this game. Can Michael Bradley stay under control and not give away the ball easily against a very solid English midfield? Can the United States prevent the incredibly fast winger Aaron Lennon from cutting in and causing peril? Can the team contain Rooney? I believe they will, as Bradley has this team prepared in an incredible fashion. The team will stay compact, looking to counter. While this style isn't always the most aesthetically pleasing, it has proven to be effective in the Confederations Cup. I see Jose Torres impacting the game in the second half, proving possession and creativity. This game would be a monumental win for the Americans and it would give them a great confidence boost. A win here would obviously drum up memories of the infamous 1950 win. Can lightning strike twice for the United States?

I believe it can.

World Cup: Day 2

After an exciting first day which saw all four teams in Group A staying level, we'll have a look at the three games being played tomorrow.

First Game: Greece v. South Korea

Group B starts off pitting the Tigers of Asia v. a veteran Greek side. The Greeks under renowned manager Otto Rehhagel plays a very compact style in the back, and looks to score goals by counterattacking. The South Koreans, led by Manchester United midfielder Ji-Sung Park have not been playing well as of late, but look to make up for their poor form tomorrow. Park is a dynamo in the center of the park and is regarded as possibly the best Asian player ever. His work rate is second to none and as Park goes, South Korea goes. AS Monaco forward Park Chu-Young is also a great threat up top for the Koreans as he uses his size and speed to open up the field. Greece relies heavily on captain Giorgos Karagounis in the midfield. His ability to manipulate the ball and spray it around the park makes him very dangeous, and his service is key if forwards Georgios Samaras and Angelo Charisteas are to be effective.

Predictions: Greece 1 South Korea 0

The heavily minded Greece team will make it tough for Park to play in the midfield due to the physical nature employed by players such as Karagounis and Kostas Katsouranis. The Koreans will have limited scoring opportunities and in the end Greece will score in the manner that they usually do: on the counter. The staunch defense will ultimately prevail as will the tactical savvy of Rehhagel, who is considered one of the best coaches in the world.

Game 2: Nigeria v Argentina

This is a very interesting game and it provides the opportunity for many fireworks. The Super Eagles are led by former Sweden coach Lars Lagerback. The dynamic pairing of Peter Odemwingie and Obafemi Martins provide immense pace and a cohesion up top that has the potential to cause the slower Argentina backline many problems. Long term stalwart and captain Nwankwo Kanu will provide depth and leadership for a Nigeria team that has good quality across the roster. A potential big loss to an already weak midfield is Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, who was ruled out of the world cup recently due to a knee injury. Players such as Kalu Uche and Dickson Etuhu need to play compact and not allow the lethal attackers of Argentina run roughshod in the middle of the pitch. I don't care what anyone says, there is no other team in the world that possessed the incredible and sublime amount of attacking options that Argentina has. Angel Di Maria, Carlos Tevez, Gonzalo Higuain, Diego Milito, and Sergio 'Kun' Aguero will make any other national side jealous, and that's not even including arguably the worlds best player in Lionel Messi. With that said, Argentina is led by the enigmatic and volatile Diego Maradona. The questionable tactics and national team selections will always hamper the Argentinians under Maradona as they have a history of underachieving greatly.

Prediction: Argentina 4 Nigeria 2

The talent that Argentina throws out onto the pitch will cause any team problems, and with a weakened midfield it will open up passing lanes for Javier Masherano and Juan Sebastian Veron to feed the trio of Messi, Tevez, and Higuain up top. The overall team speed of Nigeria will cause the iffy backline of Argentina issues but in the end the class at the forward position will prove to be the difference.

WORLD CUP PREVIEW, DAY 1

We're less than 24 hours away from the world's biggest and most popular event, and the anticipation couldn't be higher.  With almost every team missing one or two of their best players, this World Cup has the potential to be one of the most exciting or disappointing ones we'll ever see.  These injuries, however, give the opportunity for players who have never gotten an international cap  to show they deserve to represent their nation.  The first  game, Mexico vs. South Africa, is tomorrow at 8:30 AM central time on ESPN and foxsoccer.com has a great article helping anyone who isn't a huge follower but would like to know enough to keep up with the players, teams and past success of the nations (http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/worldcup/lists/Idiots-guide-to-the-World-Cup#sport=World Cup&photo=11276400).

As for the upcoming game between the United States and England, Saturday at 12:30 PM central time on ABC, tension couldn't be higher.  With the recent news coming out that Liverpool fans were actually burning the American flag in protest of their beloved club team's American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr.  Now this has actually been going on a while ago, but with our big game coming up in a few days, American soccer writers made a good choice by deciding to publish this story now to get both non-soccer watchers as well as die hard yank fans more involved and raise the bar for our fan support.

PREVIEW: MEXICO VS. SOUTH AFRICA

The first game is less than a day away, and after seeing the World Cup Kick-Off Concert, there's no doubt that South Africa's supporters will be in full force; win, lose, or draw.  Mexico is coming off of a pretty impressive run of pre-World Cup friendlies, and seem to be in great form with such a young team headlining for them.  After upsetting losses to England and Netherlands (both games Mexico showed great possession and passing), they rallied back and crushed Gambia 5-1.

They have a young midfield and strike force lead by the seasoned and experienced veteran Cuauhtémoc Blanco.  Pretty much a God to them, expect Blanco to give a final "hoorah" to his long international career and show the world that a soccer career doesn't have to end at 34 years old (Blanco is 37).

Like their offense, their man between the posts is only 24.  Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa is nothing short but great.  He isn't considered to be in the top 10 best keepers in the world, but if he can perform, he can come out as top 10 in the tournament.  Mexico looks like a surprising force to be reckoned with and I see them advancing with no problems, and possibly upsetting Argentina if it gets to that match up depending on what result they will get against France and where they finish in their group.

South Africa can really only have the mindset "we're just here to have fun".  There aren't a lot of expectations for the host nation outside of the country and for good reason.  They've only been in three World Cup finals, were banned by FIFA for 30 years, and only have one win in the tournament (1-0 against Slovenia).  This being the first ever World Cup held on the continent of Africa, there has been a lot of skepticism and doubt that this will be successful for the country, the continent, and of course the South African national team.  No host nation has ever not made it out of their group stage, until now.

PREDICTION: MEXICO 3, SOUTH AFRICA 1

This game has the potential to go many ways.  The host nations fan turnout will undoubtedly overpower that of the Mexican supporters and anyone knows that with a powerful support group in a stadium, a team can perform well beyond their normal standards.  Both teams will come out fighting for that win a remain hopeful of getting out of their group.  When all is said and done however, Mexico is just too good to lose to a team like South Africa.  Although "El Tri" have a shaky record outside of their country, they usually provide good performances in the World Cup.  If they can pass the ball and maintain possession, expect them to tear apart and below average defense and net in at least three.  South Africa can score a goal though, and when they do, expect to hear a roar from the crowd and a celebration like they just won the final game.

PREVIEW: FRANCE VS. URUGUAY

Any sports fan can tell you that France is a good soccer team that can produce results when they need to.  Any sports fan will also tell you that they're recently known for on-field fighting (Zidane's infamous head-butt to Marco Materazzi in the 2006 finals) and questionable hand balls (specifically the obvious hand ball committed by Thierry Henry that handed France a play-off win against the better side Ireland that booked their ticket to the World Cup).  Besides these recent controversies, France is always considered to be a force to be reckoned with.  There's no taking away from their players; on pen and paper, they have one of the best teams in the competition, with players like Franc Ribery (Bayern Munich), Patrice Evra (Manchester United), Bacary Sagna (Arsenal),  Eric Abidal (Barcelona), and so many others playing for the top clubs in the world.  Watch out for their youth to shine like keeper Hugo Lloris (23), and Yoann Gourcuff (23).  Their downfall with surely be their questionable and ridiculously unusual coach Raymond Domenech, who should have been sacked multiple times already.  He is way past due to be replaced, and it will show if they don't get out of their group.

Uruguay has a surprising successful history that people may not be aware of.  They have two World Cup championships, and hosted the first ever World Cup.  Although the rules were significantly different then, they still accomplished something twice that most nations will never accomplish once.  They are a dark horse in this tournament after barely qualifying for it, but that shouldn't stop them from competing and giving teams like France or Mexico a scare to finish top of their group.  Look out for veteran Diego Forlan and Sebastian Abreu to bring experience to a relatively young team.  Also, look for young striker Luis Suarez who's been on clubs like Chelsea, Barcelona, and Manchester United's radar in this upcoming transfer window.

PREDICTION: URUGUAY 2, FRANCE 1

France will not get out of this group.  They are caught in loads of scandals, bad team chemistry, a crazy coach, and a poor run of form.  Uruguay has an offense that can score goals and in great fashion.  They can control the ball, bring defenders in which will allow speedy strikers like Suarez to get past a shaky defense and an unexperienced keeper to put some in.  France better kick it into high gear after a scare against Uruguay or else their only win, or draw will be against South Africa.  If they're lucky.

Game v. Australia

Tomorrow at 8:30 am est/5:30 am pst on ESPN2/ESPN3.com. The USMNT will be facing their last test before England in the socceroos of Australia. This final tune up will provide a chance for Coach Bob Bradley to set his final lineup and tinker one last time. I would bet Jozy Altidore rests his injured ankle and according to various reports, the team is not overly worried and he should be healthy come June 12th. My predicted lineup and score...

Howard

Cherundolo Onyewu Demerit Bocanegra

Dempsey Bradley Edu Donovan

Buddle Findley

Final score: 1-1

Injury News

As if injuries haven't been an issue already for Bob Bradley and the boys, projected starting forward Jozy Altidore left practice and was hospitalized due to a mild ankle sprain. The MRI came back negative and he's listed as being day to day.

I would bet he sits out the Australia game come Saturday for additional treatment so he can get ready for England on June 12th. I believe Bradley is hellbent on having Herculez Gomez coming off the bench in order to add a spark, so look for Edson Buddle and Robbie Findley to get the start against the Socceroos.

Thoughts v. Turkey

1. Clint Dempsey plays better in the midfield

Dempsey and Landon Donovan are much more effective in the midfield as opposed to having Dempsey playing behind the lone striker in Jozy Altidore. In the second half Donovan looked much more involved and dangerous while Dempsey effectively tracked back on defense and made the overall attack much more structured. The passing in the first half was very chaotic and the overall organization of the midfield was all over the place which led to the countless times where the Turks countered and had tons of space to operate in the final third. When Robbie Findley was inserted up top, Dempsey dropped back and there was a noticeable difference in the overall play of the team. The big question for Bob Bradley is whether he sticks with Dempsey up top or has him sit in the midfield. I believe the team operates much better when Dempsey is in the midfield.

2. Jose Torres is a player

Along with the Dempsey inclusion, perhaps the most important substitute introduced to start the second half was Torres. I've eluded before that I feel he's the most technical player the United States has, and I believe Bob Bradley is finally realizing it. Torres was an absolute stud as he sprayed the ball around the park and showed clever and down right cheeky moves that help to elude numerous defenders. The energy he brought to the game lifted his team and injected a superb amount of life that wasn't there in the first half, as well as possession in the midfield. A knock on Torres is that he doesn't always gets back on defense, which is a Bradley must for his players. Not only did he get back, but he showed immense grit in making strong tackles and constantly moving the ball forward. It's no coincidence that the team's play improved in the second half. A Torres pairing with Michael Bradley in the center of the park would suffice the team greatly. I still believe either Ricardo Clark or Maurice Edu starts alongside Bradley against England, but Torres proved that he's definitely a dangerous option that the United States should take full advantage of.

3. Defense still a question mark

Carlos Bocanegra
coming back from injury put in a solid 75 minutes before being subbed out. He looked better than I thought he would fitness wise and looks prime to start come June 12th. It has to be very encouraging for Bradley and the rest of the team. Oguchi Onyewu came on and looked better than he did v. the Czech Republic, and Jay Demerit had a solid game providing the steadiness and toughness in the back. Two players that did not have good games however were the two Jonathan's, Spector and Bornstein. Spector was out of position numerous times on balls in the air and did little in terms of attacking on the overlapping runs. The one time he did do well to pose a threat, the ball was dispossessed and on the counter he was too late in getting back which led to the only Turkish goal. Bornstein got late game action and was instantly targeted and attacked by the Turks. He failed to clear the ball on numerous occasions and was absolutely skinned and nut megged in the corner which led to a great scoring chance for Turkey. I don't see why Bob Bradley has so much faith in him, because he hasn't showed anything on the national stage of late. He has decent speed but no other attribute that is impactful. His below average instincts on the pitch is really costing him and his team. Steve Cherundolo looks like a much better option and he could very well start opposite Bocanegra on the outside due to his experience and savvy.

4. Bradley knew what he was doing with inclusion of Findley

Findley looked surprisingly good up top. He flashed his noted pace which opened up the pitch for the midfield to operate. His confidence on the ball was also impressive and he looked like a completely different player from the one that we saw v. the Dutch in March. His pretty chip that helped to set up the first goal was beautiful. If Findley continues to impress in training and against Australia he very well could start alongside Altidore. It's imperative for Bradley to find another forward so Dempsey can play his comfortable position as an outside mid. The Findley selection held much debate and even backlash from people, but at least for now, Findley silenced those people with his performance today.

Players of the game: Jose Torres, Robbie Findley, Jay Demerit, Landon Donovan

This positive result against a very good team (one of if not the best to not make the World Cup) will boost morale greatly for the squad as they get ready to fly out tomorrow. The match v. Australia next Saturday will be the final dress rehearsal for the match v. England. OFF THE PITCH will be providing analysis of the Aussie match in addition to our predictions of the starting 11 Bob Bradley will field v. England.

A LESSON ON DIVING AND EXAGGERATED ACTING

Something that isn't much discussed as much as it should be is diving (also known as simulating, flopping, falling without reasonable contact, being Italian/named Didier Drogba/Cristiano Ronaldo).  In a quick definition, diving in soccer is when a player with possession of the ball goes down on what seems to be a slide tackle, elbow, punch, jersey pull, etc. from the opposing player, but in fact, there was little or no contact between the two.  Of course this is frowned upon, and FIFA and other soccer governing bodies have cracked down on it recently, but let's take a minute to really think about why people do it.  Diving is not a recent invention to the game of soccer.  It's been a part of the game since its origins.  There was always a usual bunch of players who were known for diving back in the day just like there are known "actors" in the sport in today's game.

People usually tend to dive in order to get free kicks or penalties, but what has happened with diving now is much more than getting advantage of placement on the pitch; it's turned to getting other players sent off or into foul trouble.  Being a soccer player, I can justify for exaggerating to get a free kick.  It isn't something that an on-looker is in favor of, but there is no fighting it.  It's part of the game, and getting caught doing it should result in consequence.  Most of the time when a player is caught diving, there isn't much dispute from them because they knew what they were doing and take the slap on the wrist (usually a yellow card is given to the player who simulated a foul).  Should there be more punishment for diving in soccer?  I don't think so.  Diving, to me, isn't something as serious an elbow to the face or bringing someone down by their jersey or tackling them studs up.  These are the types of misconduct that shouldn't be tolerated, and diving really doesn't fall under that category.  No one is getting hurt, except if the player committing the "foul" gets a card.   Diving will always be a part of the game, no matter how strict FIFA gets on it.

Exaggerating during the game is also something that is often talked about negatively.  Here's a simple yet understanding reason to why acting is so important to the game: A SOCCER FIELD IS A LARGE AREA THAT IS OVERSEEN BY ONLY ONE REFEREE.  There are officials on both sidelines to help out and call an off sides play, but there is only one referee that is running up and down with the flow of the game, interacting with the players.  The problem with this is that the soccer field is the largest sporting area than any other sport.  This causes the referee to miss a lot of the action that is going on off of the ball.  It's not the referee's fault that he/she misses so many fouls, and that's why these athletes have to exaggerate it.  An elbow to the eyes and nose isn't something to go without punishment, even if it doesn't do any real damage.  Anything small but negligent needs to be overacted in order for the ref. to take notice.  This is why you see a player roll around in agony or cover their face as if they're stopping from bleeding out of the face.  At first glance, it looks childish and give soccer a bad name, but think about why it isn't used in other sports...

In basketball, the court is significantly smaller than a soccer field, and the referee's are in much closer proximity to the players and can catch fouls easier.  When there is an eye gouge or an elbow, it can be seen much easier and thus eliminates the point to fall onto the ground in pain.  In sports like football and hockey, the players are heavily protected against things that would be considered negligent in other sports.  That makes it easier to spot misconduct.  In a sport like soccer, where there is contact and physical play, these things come natural to the players and enable time to be momentarily paused for players to get short periods of rest.

It may not be respected in the outside sports world, but it is part of the game, and the fact that it is coined the beautiful game, shows it isn't a reason to give up on watching.

USA - TURKEY PREDICTIONS

In tomorrows upcoming game, I'd like to see a full starting XI, or at least most of the our players that sat out on last Tuesday's game against the Czechs.  Howard should be in goal, however our defense can play around a bit if Demerit still has eye problems.  I'd like to see Cherundolo play as well as Goodson in the back.  Ideally, a 4-4-2 should be in place, and I'm more concerned about who should be playing up top than anywhere else on the pitch.  If Coach Bob Bradley does decide to put Dempsey up top to pair with Altidore, then you have to start asking what is the reasoning to bring Buddle, Gomez, and Findley?  For tomorrow's game, Findley if anyone should start up with Jozy because I, like many others out there, is incredibly surprised that he made the team after such a poor performance in his last international cap.  On top of that, he didn't even dress for the friendly against the Czech Republic.  The entire country really want to see what he's obviously been showing during training, because keeping him as a secret is not the smartest way to go.  We aren't a team that has the respect of the world yet, and keeping a playing in the dark from other countries can only  hurt us, not give us an advantage, especially if he shows up to the World Cup and underachieves due to the nervousness and lack of confidence he displayed before.

Our midfield, arguably the strongest position shouldn't be a problem tomorrow, but I wouldn't mind seeing our predicted substitutes in the World Cup get a start.  This game should be about prepping and giving the fans a reason to stick behind them and not lose interest just because some of our best known players are injured.  Starting players like Torres or Feilhaber who aren't going to start in South Africa will show fans who don't follow US soccer as much as other that we have depth behind our key players.  I think Buddle and Gomez should see some time tomorrow, and get a feel for each other playing together.  We should have a stronger team playing than we did against the Czechs and I really want to see some results,  instead of experimenting if we aren't looking so good.

Things To Watch Tomorrow:
1.  Will Robbie FIndley play?
2.  Who will start on defense?
3.  How will Gooch perform?
4.  Who will be paired up top with Altidore?
5.  How will our substitutes contribute to the game?

MY PREDICTION:
It can go many ways.  Turkey is bringing a very talented team to show Coach Guus Huddink what they're made of and the potential they have to be a competitive European giant.  If the USA can communicate well on the field and make some great passes from our midfield to our forwards, I can see us winning 3-1.  If we show a shaky performance, it can end in an unimpressive 1-0 victory.  Regardless though on how we perform, I believe the nat. team are playing to win and start their road to South Africa on a good note.

Thoughts on final 23

Coach Bob Bradley never ceases to amaze US soccer fans, and he did pull a couple surprises out today when the 23 man roster was announced. The biggest selection, or most surprising is striker Robbie Findley. Findley, who didn't even suit up last night v. the Czech Republic must have been tearing up training for him to get a spot. I understand that Bradley wants speed up top to make up for the Charlie Davies absence and while Findley does provide plenty of pace, it's rather strange that he didn't play at all last night. This could be a ploy to keep Findley 'a secret' or have some element of surprise for other teams but it doesn't make much sense. Let's hope he plays v. Turkey. The poor play of Heath Pearce evidently kept him off the squad as Bradley chose to bring on board 7 defenders (Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Jay Demerit, Jonathan Bornstein, Clarence Goodson, Steve Cherundolo, Jonathan Spector). A surprise ommission at the striking core is Brian Ching. Ching has an extensive history with the national team and did play surprising well last night showing deft skill and touch, but Bradley decided to go with form (Edson Buddle, Herculez Gomez) and speed (Findley) over experience. The nagging hamstring injury also could have played a role with the Ching exclusion. Buddle and Gomez played relatively well last night, with Gomez heading in his first goal with the national team. I think Buddle will end up starting v. England alongside Altidore which would allow Gomez to be the goal poaching threat off the bench and I believe that's the role Bradley intends him to play. Buddle showed great hustle last night and held up the ball well while showing surprising athleticism. Eddie Johnson played his usual game, flowing in and out without making much of an impact.

To no ones surprise, Sacha Kljestan and Robbie Rogers were cut. Kljestan failed to impress last night although at times Rogers looked to be very dangerous, challenging Czech keeper Petr Cech on a long range shot. The Alejandro Bedoya cinderella story came to an end. It wasn't at the cost of his playing ability but rather due to the impressive play that DaMarcus Beasley has had in camp.

The name of the game for Bradley's roster is versatility. He chose to go away from bringing on players of traditional positions and rather chose players that can play multiple ones (Stuart Holden, Clint Dempsey, Beasley, Maurice Edu, Spector, Bocanegra). It poses interesting questions though. If Onyewu isn't able to go, will Goodson get the first look? It could possibly mean shifting Bocanegra over to the middle, forcing either Bornstein or Cherundolo to start. Interestingly enough, Beasley worked not only in the midfield during training but also at left back. Edu played centermid for the first 2/3rds of yesterdays game and then proceeded to move to centerback when Onyewu was subbed out. Is this foreshadowing what will happen in South Africa?

By bringing 4 forwards, it lends me to think that Dempsey will play his more preferred role in the midfield as opposed to up top. This will strengthen the midfield, arguably the most talented part of the team. Bradley could choose to operate a 4-5-1 formation with Altidore operating as the lone striker, but there is time to tinker before South Africa. As for now, it's on to the friendly match v. Turkey on Saturday, where we shall see if Bradley chooses to use his starters. Then after the game, the boys take to the air for South Africa on Sunday.

FINAL ROSTER:

Goalkeepers:
Marcus Hahnemann, Tim Howard, Brad Guzan

Defense: Oguchi Onyewu, Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Spector, Jonathan Bornstein, Jay Demerit, Clarence Goodson, Steve Cherundolo

Midfield: Jose Francisco Torres, Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Stuart Holden, Benny Feilhaber, DaMarcus Beasley, Clint Dempsey, Ricardo Clark, Maurice Edu

Forwards: Edson Buddle, Jozy Altidore, Herculez Gomez, Robbie Findley

3 Obsevations v. Czech Republic

1. Herculez Gomez cemented himself on the final 23

Not only did Gomez score a goal off of a nice play by Clarence Goodson, but he constantly put himself in position to score, and almost scored a second off of a nice turn at the top of the 18. Out of all the forwards that played (Buddle, Johnson, Ching), he was the most dangerous and created the most opportunities. He'll provide Bob Bradley a good option off the bench in South Africa, injecting energy into the team.

2. Injury still a problem for Gooch

While most people will point to the inability to head the ball away which led to the Czech's first goal, Oguchi Onyewu looked sluggish on the field. To be fair to him, it was his first competitive game in 7 months but he did not look completely comfortable on the field. His agility wasn't where it needed to be and his fitness definitely looked to be an issue. He does have time to regain his fitness before the England match, but Bradley definitely has a tough decision on his hands. Does he start and play a weakened Onyewu, or does he bench him in favor of Goodson (who looked good tonight)? Bradley could possibly move Carlos Bocanegra over to the middle, which would shift the entire defense and ultimately allow for Jonathan Bornstein to start.

3. Depth is still not where it should be

Most people will acknowledge that the depth in the national team pool is arguably the strongest it's ever been. That still doesn't mean that the bench/fringe players can compete well. The absense of Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, and Carlos Bocanegra among others really showed the lack of class the pool has. Sacha Kljestan made no impact when he was subbed in, and Jonathan Bornstein looked extremely shaky in the back (and he could conceivably start). Heath Pearce was absolutely torched most of the night and could very well have played himself off a spot on the roster. The main point is that the team relies heavily on the aforementioned quartet (along with Jozy Altidore and Tim Howard), and that isn't going to change anytime soon.

Tomorrow should be interesting as Bradley announces the final 23. I could see Alejandro Bedoya making the team over Heath Pearce. I also found it quite interesting to see Maurice Edu playing in the back. He did misjudge the ball on the 4th goal but it maybe lends to the notion that Bradley is toying with the idea of actually using him at that position in South Africa. Lets just hope it doesn't come down to that point. He's much better in the midfield.

Predictions: USA v. Czech Republic/Final Roster

I see the United States pulling out a 2-1 victory against the young Czech side. I will be watching intently to see how Oguchi Onyewu looks, as well as the striker situation up top with players such as Herculez Gomez, Robbie Findley, and Edson Buddle.

Jason's Final Roster:

Goalkeepers:

Analysis: Forwards

The horrific car crash suffered by Charlie Davies robbed the United States of arguably their fastest player. His injury totally changed the complexion of the starting forward line. Davies was just staring to get into a groove at club side Sochaux as well as with the national team, providing the team an element missing in recent years. With that said, Bob Bradley will look to a group that isn't entirely proven on the world stage or for the national team.

Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Brian Ching, Herculez, Gomez

Cut: Edson Buddle, Robbie Findley, Eddie Johnson

Projected Starting Two: Altidore and Clint Dempsey

Altidore appears to be a lock to start in South Africa. His overall size and athletic ability has posed problems for many teams including Spain, when he effectively shouldered off Villarreal teammate Joan Capdevila and fired a shot that caught keeper Iker Casillas leaning the wrong way to put the United States ahead in their eventual monumental win. The year hasn't been a memorable one for Jozy as he tallied one goal during his loan time at Hull, which also saw him receive a three game suspension at the end of the year for a headbutt against an opposing player. He was also criticized by his manager about his lack of enthisiasm and desire during training time. Needless to say, this world cup is important for Jozy as he looks to possibly latch on to another side. At only 20 years old he has limitless potential, but he needs a good showing in South Africa. Dempsey looks to get the nod up top but the striking core behind the two starters is extremely shallow and Bradley has to be fretting about if the strikers can score enough in this tournament. Ching has been a constant on the national team for many years and has a good accord with Bradley. You definitely know what you're going to get with Ching, a player who isn't flashy or technical, but rather a player that is extremely hard working and very adept to helping out defensively. He is solid aerially and can hold the ball up effectively as well. I see him subbing onto the field for Altidore in late game situations when the United States has the lead. Holding possession and waiting for corresponding options to move futher up the pitch will earn him some late game minutes. I see Gomez stealing the last spot just due to the fact that he's came out of nowhere and became the season scoring leader in the Mexican league for Puebla. The former MLS veteran was on a torrid pace this season as he knotched 10 goals in 14 games. No other United States striker can boast that current form, and in this sport it is a 'what have you done lately' game, and Gomez has performed very well. He'll add a speed element off the bench, and an aspect of his game that cannot be discounted is the fact that many of his goals he scored for Puebla were when he came off the bench. It shows Bradley that he's more than capable of coming on as a substitute and effecting the game in a positive fashion. Buddle is also in great form with the Los Angeles Galaxy, as the partnership between himself and Landon Donovan has the Galaxy at the top of the table. His scoring pace has been very impressive for the Galaxy and his chemistry with Donovan cannot be slighted. Although these are positives, reports out of camp indicate that Buddle has been struggling mightily with the fitness portion of the camp, constantly finishing dead last in conditioning runs. His lack of international experience (one cap) also does not bode well either. Johnson has enjoyed mild success with his new side Aris in Greece, but a nagging hamstring injury has significantly hurt his chances to make the team. He's been limited in training while the other candidates have been showing their stuff, so to speak. The Czech game will be a big test for Johnson to see if he's fit enough to play in South Africa. His biggest asset is the ability to stretch the field which makes him dangerous, especially without Davies in the fold. The United States could definitely make use of it. Findley is a player in the mold of Davies: one who possesses above-average pace and below-average size. He isn't however, close to the player that Davies is. Against the Dutch, he looked incredibly tentative and had no confidence whatsoever on the ball. He just isn't ready for international football, especially on the grandest stage of all, the World Cup.

Questions: Will someone step up and fill the void missing by Davies? Will the strikers produce well enough to alleviate pressure off of the midfield? Which newcomers out of Findley, Gomez, and Buddle will make the team (if at all)?

The friendly v. the Czech Republic will be incredibly interesting to watch. For the candidates minus Altidore, this game is imperative in order to have a good showing I can see a scenario in which Gomez, Findley, and Buddle get extended runs out on the pitch, but I also feel like Bradley already has a good idea as to whom he will bring to South Africa.
